CIF Round Four – If You Go Down To The Woods, Jack Drum Arts

“If you Go Down to the Woods” was a piece of interactive professional outdoor theatre aimed at people of all ages performed in Hamsterley Forest and inspired by the legends and storytelling heritage of Weardale and Teesdale.

The creative team worked alongside approx 20 young people to research and develop content for the production.  In so doing, they explored folk tales, songs and legends specific to Weardale and Teesdale along the narrative themes of water (the legend of water spirit Peg Powler); “life demanding” rivers; moor and fell (fairy mounds, the Rookhope Ride, braag horses), nature and plantlore; towns and settlements (belief in folk figures, enchantments in history and folklore).

The play was then developed in rehearsal and frequent visits to Hamsterley Forest
