CIF Round Four – Bishop Auckland Advent Windows

This project created a giant advent calender in Bishop Auckland whereby 24 shops in the town “opened” a window on a Christmas theme every day from 1st to 24th December.  Each shop partnered with a school or other community organisation working on designs and installing the display a few days before the opening.

The theme of the advent windows was built around 13 paintings of Jacob and his Twelve Sons by the Spanish artist Zurbarán housed in Auckland Castle.  Twenty four life-size models were made of those Jacob and his sons together with other models of characters from the nativity story.  On Christmas Eve, each model was collected from the shop windows and paraded through the town to St Peter’s Chapel at Auckland Castle where they were on display during the holiday period.
