CIF Round Three – Holwick Stories, Altogether Archaeology

This is an extension of Altogether Archaeology’s excavation at Holwick in 2018. They explored the cultural heritage of this deserted medieval hamlet through creative activities and oral history research. As in CIF Round 1, members were supervised by a professional archaeologist to excavate the Holwick site (11th – 26th May 2019). They held open days and guided heritage walks, but what was different in this round was that they engaged oral historian Rachel Cochrane to talk to, record and make podcasts of the experiences of visitors, local people and dig participants. Local children took part in finds processing and were encouraged to respond to their discoveries though artwork and creative writing. An adult art group also spent time at the site. They worked with filmmakers Lonely Tower Film & Media, to tell the story of Holwick as two short films: an artistic response to the landscape, archaeology, creative input of the community and stories gathered through the oral histories plus a documentary account of the dig.
